History of Serpent River First Nation
- After 15 years of hard work by Chief and Council, a $5.7 million cleanup of the Acid Plant is completed. An estimated 9000 truckloads of material are hauled to the Spanish dump, enough to fill three football fields. Some material is left in the ground and a huge sewage holding tank continues to leach into Lake Huron to the present day.
- Federal government Minister Jane Stewart’s apology for residential school. Aboriginal Healing Foundation established and $350 million is set aside for survival healing.
- $1.9 billion compensation package set aside for residential school survivors.
